Cafe MIYAMA feels like home to me.

I’m sure I’m going to get a few eye rolls from people who know the city well, because this tiny little coffee/sandwich shop–part of a chain on at least 5 or 6 that I know of—is not exactly “hidden” in Tokyo and doesn’t really count as a “tip”. It is, in fact, almost directly across the street from the Sunroute Shinjuku hotel, and just minutes from Shinjuku station, so it’s a pretty obvious choice for anyone in the area. From Takashimaya’s entrance, head straight down past MyLord department store toward the Citibank and First kitchen. Make a left onto Yoyogi, and go downstairs from this adorable little orange sign for the best matcha soy latte you will ever have in your life and an atmosphere that is busy enough to not make you feel on display, but quiet enough to allow you to concentrate.

Ideal for planning your days on the fly and reflecting on all the money you spent in Harajuku…

I bought my journal to this place nearly every morning before heading out to sightsee, and though I was in and out in under an hour, there were others in there who clearly intended to study for as long as they could. It’s that kind of place. The food is American in style, I’d say—I’m a vegetarian so I didn’t take real close notes on the sandwiches–but presented in a way that in indisputably Japanese (you get half a banana with your breakfast, cut perfectly, and a little tiny salad, too. Gotta love the variety of little portions). Plus, they have a coffee bar that can take care of all your latte and espresso cravings, and the wait staff, at least in the south Shinjuku one, can’t be beat.

I don’t think there will ever be a time in Japan where I won’t return to this place and just reflect and get my bearings in a city where everything moves so fast. It was the first place I returned to on my second trip, and I’ll be there for my first morning this time around, too.
